Business Intelligence and Data Management Resources

Last week I was interviewed in an e-chat with Shawn Hessinger, AllAnalytics.Com,  about deploying BI tools to help build your business.   It was a great interview and lots of amazing discussion with some really smart people. He summarized the discussion in this article: 6 Steps to a Successful BI Deployment. [If you visit the site please leave a comment about how smart the discussion sounded ] AllAnalytics has a lot of great information about managing data, using business intelligence and just general analytics topics.  It’s a data geek’s paradise – and you know who you are!       Also – in my BlogRoll (right corner, near the bottom) I note a lot of other awesome blogs and sites with yummy information for you.

Android/WebOS Apps for Quick SAS Reference

I’m delighted that Phil Holland, Holland Numerics, has written a guest post today.  Phil, clearly a SAS icon,  is the author of numerous SAS books that are available from multiple sources.  He recently expanded his work into some new and exciting formats, which he is discussing in this post. Writing SAS Books Let me be very clear about my attitude to writing books. I am never going to sell enough of my SAS books to compete with J K Rowling. I write books purely to market my SAS skills, and I’m never going to earn enough from selling books that will allow me to retire early, even if I wanted to! I discovered over the last few years that there are a lot of illegal copies of both my two previous books, and I mean a lot! Part of me is flattered by the proliferation of my books, and another part of me is offended by the criminal acts of illegally copying MY BOOKS! It appears that several people have obtained (bought?) paper copies of my books, scanned them and distributed the scanned copies on Torrent sites. I’ve informed SAS Publishing of these Torrent sites, but it is futile to […]

Career: Secrets from a Professional SAS Recruiter

Recently I spoke with Dick Smith, Talent Engagement Manager for PiTech Solutions, about some tips for working with recruiters. He’s an experienced technical recruiter so I think you’ll find this information particularly insightful. He offers a good mix of traditional job search strategies and ways to leverage social media for your job search. Working with SAS Recruiters As for working with SAS or specialty recruiters, the technology world is most times defined by skill sets or product expertise. In SAS for example, there is a big difference between a SAS/Stat Programmer and a SAS BI/Analytics skill set. For my money, the KISS method applies in either case. So to begin with, keep your resume simple and straightforward. Tell the reader what you can do, what your best expertise is, and what you are looking to do with your career next. Our screening process here at PITech Solutions, for instance, has a focus on the individual. Of greatest importance to us is to clearly understand what kind of position you are really looking for, or put another way – what is the ideal job for you? What do you see as your strongest expertise in the IT field at this point in your […]

SAS BI: Looking at Google Analytics for Popular Blog Topics

This past week I have been studying the Google Analytics data to determine the best topics to discuss in the upcoming month and to prepare the SAS Glo Fo 2012 conference. Google Analytics allows me to measure which posts get the most hits when posted and continue to be popular or referenced. I’ll unveil my little known, but highly coveted analytics process. How’s that for some hype? Getting the Google Analytics Data In a past article, I discussed how I extracted the data from Google Analytics using Excellent Analytics. The following figure shows my query in the Excellent Analytics tool, the data results, and the results in SAS Enterprise Guide. The data consists of the date, post path and title (with URL), source (how person came to site), and visitor type. It’s probably obvious why I would want the date, post, and source but what is not so obvious is visitor type. Visitor Type allows me analyze what topics bring new visitors to the site as well as the topics that retain visitors. Cleaning Up the Data My original plan was to use MS Excel to complete this analysis since I thought it would be simple. However, I realized that […]

SAS 9.4 – Wahoo!

I have seen my first tech support track response that mentions SAS 9.4. Wahoo the countdown begins! SAS 9.4 is also mentioned once on the support.sas.com site: http://support.sas.com/techsup/pcn/openvms93.html

JMP is bundled with SAS Enterprise Miner in both 9.2 & 9.3

I blogged a while ago about some changes to the SAS licensing with SAS adding a few more capabilities at no extra charge (didn’t even need to buy the steak knives One of the things I mentioned was that JMP is now bundled as part of SAS Enterprise Miner (to match your EM client license). But I […]

Big ups to Mr Mark Wastney

Mark was one of our star DI developers over at OptimalBI.com where we took his legendary Oracle data warehousing and ETL skills and showed him how to do it better and faster with SAS DI. Hey even managed to pick up and deliver some data quality projects using Data Flux. (picked up as in he was dropped in the deep-end […]
