The “SAS/GRAPH for beginners” presentation seemed homemade for me. And since many of the SAS Tech Report readers are interested in SAS/GRAPH, I decided to sit in on this NESUG 2010 presentation. The paper was written by George Obsekov and Jonathan Bartlett from the American College of Radiology Research Center in Philadelphia, PA. Obsekov presented the paper in Baltimore, and began by saying that SAS/GRAPH programming language is vast and can be intimidating to the novice programmer. Wow. I wondered, “Why use SAS/GRAPH when you already have the data and now you’ll have to learn another SAS programming language?”
“SAS/GRAPH software creates and delivers accurate, high-impact visuals that enable decision makers to gain a quick understanding of critical business issues.”
So, you can use your data to design graphs that will provide:
- A compact and structured synthesis of information
- Succinct summaries of data
- Comparisons and contrasts
- Visually impactful data that can be easily read from a table
- Tables showing trends
Obsekov began with the simplest form of PROC GPLOT, which plots the data on a graph.
